The Republic of Iraq is located in Middle East at the head of the Persian Gulf. It borders on Iran, Turkey, Syria, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait. The land is mostly alluvial plain created by the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, with a desert climate. Iraq is one of the cradles of civilization. The ancient Sumerian, Akkadian, Babylonian, and Assyrian civilizations all flourished by the riverbanks. The 24 million people of Iraq are 75 - 80% Arab. The Kurds in the north of the country at 15 - 20% of the population are the largest of several ethnic minorities. Iraqis are predominantly Moslem, 60% Shi'a, 37% Sunni. The Sunni minority has historically been economically and politically dominant. The country's major industry is oil, exploiting its vast reserves. Roughly 44% of the population, however, is still engaged in agriculture. The per capita gross domestic product is approximately $2500.
