Update: WiRED’s Medical Education Work in Iraq
August 2006

This summer, WiRED International has been coordinating a telemedicine program between three U.S. medical universities and four medical schools in Iraq.

The Iraq telemedicine program runs four days per week: three days with physicians and one day with nurses. The Children’s National Medical Center (CNMC) in Washington, DC, and the University of California, San Francisco Medical School (UCSF) provide the physicians and professors to lead the seminars. San Francisco State University School of Nursing (SFSU) provides professors to assist nursing trainers in Erbil.

This is a unique program – it’s the only current medical education activity operating across Iraq. WiRED installed the necessary equipment and provides support for the satellite connections and operation of the program. WiRED also organizes the schedule for the three U.S. and four Iraqi institutions participating in the program.

To date, WiRED's Medical Information Centers currently operate in more than 30 medical schools and teaching hospitals in Iraq.
