Update: Basra Teaching Hospital and WiRED Advance Information Programs
|
Journals On-line
|
|
Under the guidance of neurosurgeon and hospital director, Dr. Khalid N. Mayah, the Basra MIC became the first in Iraq to access the World Health Organization's (WHO) HINARI database of medical journals. WHO, in cooperation with two-dozen affiliate organizations, has obtained cost-free access to more than 2,400 biomedical journals for health care professionals in developing countries. Medical faculty and students in Basra can now search and access full-text articles directly from current and back issues of the most authoritative medical journals.

All WiRED MICs in Iraq and other countries in which WiRED operates will soon obtain access to this remarkable research collection.
Basra Teaching Hospital Website
In addition to getting quick access to the HINARI database, the staff at the Basra Hospital has taken an active role in building its own Website and developing a CD-based nurses' training program.
The website, currently an information tool within the hospital and for local people, will soon become a distribution point for peer-reviewed research and scientific articles by Iraqi physicians and medical academics. At present, Iraqi researchers have no ready outlet through which to public their research. This initial step will provide the first opportunity in nearly 20 years for the Iraqi medical community to distribute its scientific research to a worldwide audience.

Finally, WiRED and the Edelman Institute at San Francisco State University is working with Dr. Khalid and his staff to construct a nurses' training program. This CD-based program will be adapted by the Iraqi medical faculty from recognized nurses' training material developed in the West. The Basra staff will tailor the program to meet specific needs of its nursing corps. WiRED is serving as an information resource and partner in this Iraqi-directed effort.
