Touching Many Lives

Written by Peris Wakesho, Coordinator, Mombasa CHIC
Edited by Christine Scivicque

The Mombasa CHIC staff managed to reach a group of Imams, propelling them into action in the fight against HIV/AIDS. The CHIC staff got this chance when they joined them in a forum organized by Family Planning Association of Kenya (one of WiRED's collaborators). There, the staff set up their equipment and went on to disseminate information to the group of Imams. The main focus of discussion was Sexually Transmitted Infections, including HIV, and their impact on society.

To be allowed to speak to the Imams, the CHIC staff had to dress "appropriately" — the ladies in long skirts and shawls over their heads. Though scared at first, the staff managed to pass the necessary information to the Imams. After showing the images in the STIs CD ROM, a discussion followed.

The Imams were very happy and cooperative. What was evident was that they had been left out of the HIV/AIDS issues and forums for a very long time, despite the fact that they are always in contact with many people — a ripe audience for the information. They were especially grateful to learn that diseases manifested themselves in different ways and some could be confused for others. For instance, some of the STIs manifested themselves as blisters and skin rashes and could be confused for measles. Therefore, they learnt the need for people to be extremely careful and not judge things as they appear without a doctor's confirmation.

After this, the staff also received invitations for the training of TBAs in Mombasa and to give talks and show the images on STIs, HIV/AIDS in various places. Also, other Imams have brought people to the centre for information.

We are glad we took the initiative for them and we will continue touching many hearts.
