WiRED International -- World Information Resources for Education and Development

Our Mission:
Providing information and communication resources that benefit disadvantaged people around the world.

September 2004 Highlights:

  1. WiRED International WiRED's Community Health Information Centers engage clients in a safe, non-judgmental manner. Thus, they serve a critical role as an entry point to the HIV/AIDS prevention network. More than 900 clients who visited Centers in Kenya during the month of August were referred to other institutions or organizations (such as hospitals, family planning clinics, or voluntary counseling and testing centers) for additional professional support and/or medical testing. An example is the young student who was eventually diagnosed and treated for TB based on the information he learned during a visit to the Butula Center.

  2. Despite the security difficulties confronting organizations in Iraq, WiRED is planning to install an additional six Medical Information Centers in the northern region of the country. We remain the principal supplier of current medical information for Iraqi medical schools and strive to provide as many faculty and students as possible with medical e-libraries.

  3. With help from the Tiburon-Belvedere Rotary Club in California, and the Rotary Club in Leon, Nicaragua, WiRED is planning this fall to expand its Medical Information Center program into Honduras. During the next few months, we will work out details to install a Center in Choluteca's largest hospital. This project will also install one additional Medical Information Center in Leon, Nicaragua.
