WiRED Receives Grant from The Medtronic Foundation For Medical Education in Serbia and Kosovo

The Medtronic Foundation announced in early August that it will provide a humanitarian grant to support WiRED's medical education work in Serbia and Kosovo. This grant will continue the Medtronic Foundation's generous underwriting of WiRED's Medical Information Centers in the former Yugoslavia. It will cover new equipment and installation and share in the operating costs for medical content.

WiRED's Medical Information Centers (MICs) make available computers, medical databases and Internet connections that enable medical communities to access the latest technical journals, textbooks and research material. The MICs also allow doctors and medical students to communicate with experts in other cities and countries.

The Medtronic Foundation's grants during the past several years have provided more than a dozen Medical Information Centers serving thousands of medical professionals and students in the region. This year, The Medtronic Foundation's support also will enable WiRED to install a video conferencing facility at the University of Kragujevac School of Medicine in central Serbia. WiRED will coordinate a telemedicine program consisting of seminars, lectures and clinical assessment sessions. WiRED's real-time, video conferencing programs, currently operating in Iraq, will be extended to the new facility in Serbia and in several existing facilities in Kosovo.
