Meet WiRED's Volunteers

Chet, Val, and Emily Bardo

Emily is a student at CalPoly, San Luis Obispo, majoring in animal science. Her eventual goal is to be a large animal vet. Chet is district superintendent for Santa Cruz Mountains District, California State Parks. Val is a maintenance worker at Butano State Park and also works part-time as an administrative assistant.

 

“We are all very proud and grateful to be part of WiRED’s team. It has broadened our perspective and provided us with an opportunity to do something tangible for positive change, even in the dark days of the past eight years,” says Val.

 

Ann Britton, Creative Director, Banana Design

Ann is the executive creative director and founder of Banana Design. After graduating with a graphic design degree from Chico State California, Ann started her career in Portland, Oregon. She had the privilege of working with Nike for two years. Other halls she has walked in are Wieden & Kennedy, Cinco Design, and Anton Kimball. Five years later, Ann moved to the Bay Area where she continues to work with Nike and other high-end clients such as Goodby Silverstein & Partners, Wells Fargo, United Way, Columbia Sportswear, Nestle, and Hybrid Design.

 

Ann has worked on big and small projects and says the variety of work is fun for her. Engaging the audience is what’s important to her. Ann says, “It doesn't matter if the project is a logo, ad, brochure, or website, it’s about the desired reaction of the target audience.” Ann’s ability to listen, organize, and think creatively brings a high-level quality to all the work she does. As a volunteer for WiRED, she redesigned this website and designed the International Telemedicine Network (ITN) website.

Sarah Dekker

Sarah is currently a legal secretary at Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati in Palo Alto. She was born and raised in East Los Angeles and graduated from California State University, Los Angeles with a BS in Business Education. She has worked at companies and corporate law firms as an executive secretary/legal secretary for over 30 years. She married in 1985, and moved with her husband, Peter, to Singapore. They decided to return to Los Angeles when starting a family. Their daughter, Laura, is now 22 and their son, Remmert, is 20.

 

Eighteen years ago she moved to Montara and met Gary Selnow, who at the time was Professor of Communications at San Francisco State University. Gary shared his idea to help people in war-torn countries and soon this idea grew and became WiRED. “A long-time volunteer on the Coastside, I look forward to helping WiRED by offering administrative, secretarial. and organizational skills (data entry, letter writing, document processing),” says Sarah.

 

Siobhan Geary

Siobhan is a clinical nurse specialist with Sutter Health in Sacramento. She received her BSN at the University of San Francisco, and her MS at the University of California, San Francisco. She has a background in neurosurgery, critical care, cardiac surgery, and pediatrics, and currently works hospital-wide patient safety and quality issues. Siobhan’s hobbies include hiking, bike riding, traveling, cooking, and wine tasting.

 

Ember Harker, Creative Metaphor Design

Ember is the conceptual designer behind the work of Creative Metaphor Design. She is known within the industry for her strong conceptual skills and strategic thinking combined with her clean design aesthetic. She has been a key participant in many international programs for some of the largest companies in the world as well as rendering her services to inspiring individuals, businesses, and non-profits. She has worked on identity, web, and print projects for clients such as the Chez Panisse Foundation, IRIS Distribution, Behr Paints, Chevron, Eastland Shoes, Holland America Cruise Lines, Levis, Plaxo, Stewart Enterprises, Symantec, and Oracle among many others.

Allison Kozicharow

Allison brings more than 20 years’ experience in writing and editing to the WiRED family and has known and worked with Gary Selnow since the early 1980s.

 

Currrently, Ms. Kozicharow is a senior level editor/writer at Macro International Inc. She is responsible for publications and products in the fields of health, education, and drug and alcohol abuse treatment and prevention. Ms. Kozicharow edits across all division contracts, mainly within the Department of Health and Human Services including U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, Health Communications Initiative for the Prevention of Underage Alcohol Use, Safe Schools/Healthy Students, the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, Family Guide To Keeping Youth Mentally Healthy & Drug Free, as well as the Department of Defense’s Quit Tobacco—Make Everyone Proud campaign and the National Institutes of Health’s National Eye Institute. In addition, Ms. Kozicharow provides writing and editorial support to publications in Spanish translation.

 

Geri Macomber

Geri holds a B.S. in Applied Math from Brown University and a M.S. in Operations Research from Stanford University. She spent 15 years in engineering and management in the telecommunications industry. While raising her two sons, Geri did volunteer work for their schools and sports’ teams. For the past 7 years, she has been a math and English tutor at the local public high school.

 

Two years ago, Geri started taking classes in web design and development. She is now doing freelance website development for non-profits and small businesses. Geri enjoys combining her programming skills with the creative aspects of layout and design and using her talents to help non-profit organizations with their web needs.

Holly Mitten

Holly has had a successful career practicing law for the past 31 years. She’s also spent many hours doing volunteer work of various kinds, and traveled, hiked and shared many wonderful times. “I've always felt that my life would have another stage when I would focus my full-time activities on more directly humanitarian pursuits,” says Holly. “Now is that time.”

 

Che Pangborn

Since, 1999, Che Pangborn has volunteered much of his time to help establish WiRED's programs in Bosnia, Kosova, Kenya, and Iraq. His expertise is information technology, including computer networking and satellite communication. But, Che also is a remarkable teacher, which he amply demonstrated in Kenya where he taught WiRED's Kenyan staff how to set up computer networks and troubleshoot communication problems. After several years of living and working in the former Yugoslavia and Iraq, Che has settled Stateside and is enjoying a slower paced life. "I went from 60 to 0 in no time flat and I'm loving it. I'm essentially doing the same work I did while abroad, but now I can be home for dinner every night."

Marianne Senkowski Smolucha

Marianne is a Mom to two teenaged girls. She is currently working towards a degree in social work, with gerontology as a minor. She disagrees with Aristotle’s assertion that optimism is a character flaw.

 

Nick Soberanis

Nick graduated from the University of San Francisco with a degree in Accounting, and completed post-graduate degree in Finance and Financial Planning from Golden Gate University. Nick retired from Bank of America, after a 39-year career, which included assignments as branch manager, as well as managerial assignments in San Francisco Private Banking and International Money Transfer.

 

Nick served as president of the Pacifica Chamber of Commerce and the Pacifica Land Trust. He also volunteers his time to the Elk Grove Senior Center and is currently serving as that organization's treasurer. He has also served as president of the Team Bank of America Sacramento-Sierra Retiree Chapter. He is married with three grown sons and three grandsons.

 

Angela Woon

Angela has more than 10 years of experience in the non-profit sector as a communications specialist.

 

Originally from Malaysia, Angela has been in the United States for the past 13 years. Currently working for Blood Centers of the Pacific, San Francisco, she graduated from Iowa State University, Ames, with a bachelor of science in journalism and mass communication with a minor in hotel management. She previously worked for the YWCA – Ames, Iowa, as a coordinator for children’s programs.

 

With a love of volunteering and writing, Angela is currently/has done pro bono work for the Malaysian Professional Business Association, Streetside Stories, and most recently completed a website project with the Taproot Foundation. She is also an information services broadcast radio reader at the Lighthouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired, and a personal services volunteer for them and the Little Brothers of the Elderly, San Francisco. “Nothing makes me happier than helping someone and putting a smile on their face,” said Angela.

 

Angela’s hobbies include travelling, photography, hiking, camping, eating and reading.
