WiRED builds resilient communities through frontline health education.

Strengthening Community Health Workers

WiRED International, providing healthcare training in low-resource countries for 30-years, offers not only Basic and Advanced CHW Training, but also a Continuing Medical Education (CME) Program to ensure that CHWs everywhere have the knowledge, skills and confidence they need to protect their communities. This is especially critical now that severe budget cuts have brought about the most challenging health conditions in low-resource countries.

A Global CME Program Designed for CHWs

Using smartphone-based proprietary technology, the program delivers hundreds of evidence-based training modules directly into the hands of CHWs. They can study the modules on their phones without traveling and without cost.

WiRED’s program is:

  • Open to CHWs worldwide
  • Aligned with World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines for CHWs
  • Accessible on smartphones, even in low-bandwidth environments
  • Continuously updated to reflect current evidence and emerging health threats
What the Program Offers
  • Health education and behavioral change communication—a priority
  • Infectious diseases (TB, HIV, malaria, respiratory illnesses and emerging outbreaks)
  • Maternal, newborn and child health
  • Noncommunicable diseases such as hypertension and diabetes
  • Nutrition, sanitation and preventive care
  • Community surveillance and outbreak response
  • Referral, triage and coordination with local health systems

All content is evidence-based, reviewed by experts and designed for real-world use.

Built for Retention, Skill Development, and Rapid Response
  • Refresh and retain existing knowledge
  • Develop new clinical and public health skills
  • Return to modules as often as needed
  • Rapidly access guidance during outbreaks or health emergencies
  • Track annual credits earned through WiRED’s phone app

This approach ensures that CHWs remain prepared not only for today’s challenges, but for new diseases, evolving threats, and expanding responsibilities.

Meeting a Critical Moment in Global Health
  • Medicines and vaccines
  • Health facilities and trained clinicians
  • Public health infrastructure and surveillance systems

As formal systems decline, CHWs are being asked to do more than ever before. This program equips them to safely and effectively step into their expanded role—without adding cost or burden.

Why This Program Matters
  • It democratizes medical education, making high-quality training available to CHWs regardless of geography or income
  • It strengthens local capacity, reducing reliance on fragile external systems
  • It improves health outcomes by ensuring that CHWs deliver care that is current, accurate and aligned with global standards
  • It builds resilience, so communities are better prepared for future health crises
Your Next Steps to Begin CME Training

Here are the specific “next steps” for a CHW to begin and manage this program:

  1. Download the HealthMAP App

The first technical step is to download the HealthMAP mobile app:

Offline Functionality: This is a critical feature. You should use a temporary internet connection to download the app.

  1. Create a Personal Account

Within the app, you sign up for a personal, password-protected account.

  • This account acts as your digital portfolio.
  • It allows the system to link your quiz scores and progress specifically to your certification record.
  1. Browse and Select Modules

WiRED offers hundreds of peer-reviewed modules concerning infectious and non-communicable diseases and a wide range of CME skills and practices. As a next step, you should:

  • Select modules that reflect the specific health challenges in your local area or help you develop new clinical and other CHW-specific skills (e.g., outbreak preparation, managing CHW teams, managing a health screening clinic).
  • Check for “Urgent” Updates. WiRED frequently posts training for emerging threats (such as new infectious disease outbreaks), which are often prioritized for CME credit.
  1. Complete Modules and Quizzes

Each training session concludes with a comprehensive quiz.

  • Study: Engage with the interactive material.
  • Take the Quiz: You must pass the quiz at the end of the module to earn credit.
  • Record Results: Once finished, click the button within the app to upload/store your results to the online database. Scores can be saved within the app while offline and can be submitted later to the online database once an internet connection is reestablished.
  • Immediately after completing 50 CME credits CHWs are provided with a recorded, number and personalized certificate (a PDF that can be printed.)
  1. Monitor the CME Tracker

Regularly log into the Online CME Tracker (accessible via the app).

  • Verify Credits: Ensure your points are being recorded toward your annual 50-credit quota.
  • Gap Analysis: The tracker will show you exactly how many more credits you need before the year’s end.

WIRED’s CME Program is free to all CHWs.

Why donors should support this program

The WiRED CME program offers an extraordinary return on a modest investment. Because it is funded entirely by donors, we provide these essential resources to CHWs at no cost. In the realm of global health, few investments rival the impact-per-dollar of equipping CHWs with the knowledge and skills they need to provide lifelong care.
