In 2024, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported that more than 6,000 people died from cholera, with a 50% increase in deaths compared to 2023.
Africa, the Middle East and Asia accounted for 98% of the global burden of the disease. WHO has warned that the weakening of health systems because of budget cuts to global health could reverse years of progress and lead to more cholera deaths.
In 2023, an estimated 10.8 million people fell ill with TB, and 1.25 million people died from the disease.
TB is a major cause of death, especially in low- and middle-income countries, where more than 80% of cases and deaths occur. WHO reports that budget cuts to health programs are leaving millions of people at risk of TB in Africa and elsewhere.

An estimated 597,000 people died from malaria in 2023, with 95% of these deaths occurring in Africa.
The pilot malaria vaccine programs have already shown a positive impact, with a 13% drop in overall child deaths in areas where the vaccine was administered. However, budget cuts are seen as a major threat to these gains made against malaria.
In 2023, there were an estimated 10 million measles cases globally and 107,500 deaths, mostly among children.
Measles is one of the most contagious human diseases, and its resurgence is a major indicator of a lack of health equity. WHO reports that outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases such as measles are rising globally, and while the illness had virtually disappeared globally, many countries are at risk of the disease re-emerging.

Donate to WiRED!
WiRED is determined to continue this vital work, but we cannot do it alone. With your support, we can multiply our CHW training programs and expand access to critical health knowledge, help communities defend themselves against preventable illness, and give people the tools they need to survive — and thrive — despite shrinking medical resources. Together, our donors and volunteers can make a difference.
