WiRED’s Ebola Training

In June World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told reporters in Geneva that “The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is showing signs of progress — but significant challenges remain in testing, surveillance, vaccine development and building community trust.”

That argues strongly for Ebola prevention measures to prepare communities in advance of the virus. Thus, WiRED International’s Community Health Worker (CHW) Ebola training is vital to communities potentially in the path of this disease.

Indeed, in response to WHO’s Ebola emergency declaration in May, WiRED tested our Health Alert System for CHWs, which enables CHWs to warn their communities right away about epidemics, to educate them on diseases, to teach them prevention measures and to report suspected cases to health authorities.

Although Kenya and the DRC are neighbors, Kenya has not experienced a single reported case of Ebola to date. Yet due to the global emergency, the #1 health concern noted by WiRED CHWs in Kisumu, Kenya in their May report was Ebola. In June, however, Ebola was not  recorded as a top concern. Why? One important reason is that WiRED CHWs quickly prepared their communities for Ebola outbreaks using our Ebola module series. Accurate information helps remove the mystery and instills confidence in a community. Note that WiRED health training modules are available to CHWs and everyone — easily accessible through WiRED’s HealthMAP app.

As of July 26, 2026, the Global Outbreak Tracker reports 2,364 confirmed cases and 932 deaths from Ebola disease caused by the Bundibugyo virus — mainly in the Central Africa countries of the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda.
