WiRED Offers Extensive Materials Relating to Heart Health

World Heart Day is September 29 — which serves to raise awareness and information about heart well-being, cardiovascular disease and stroke.
WiRED International contributes to the understanding of heart health by offering a wealth of materials on the subject, from providing basic information for general audiences to training nurses in the echocardiographic diagnosis of heart diseases.
WiRED offers the following modules — all at no charge — relating to cardiovascular disease:
- A Cardiovascular Disease Overview. Created for general audiences, this module describes coronary heart artery disease, heart attack, coronary congestive heart failure and congenital heart failure.
- Rheumatic Heart Disease This module package designed for students, teachers and community health workers addresses the prevention, recognition and treatment of rheumatic heart disease.
- Echocardiographic Diagnosis of Rheumatic Heart Disease Nurse Training Modules — These modules enable nurses and other medical professionals to understand the development and pathophysiology of rheumatic heart disease and to learn how to acquire and interpret echocardiograms in the diagnosis of the condition. The project resulted from an international collaboration between WiRED and pediatric physicians and professors Daniel Engelman, Caroline Watson, Bo Remenyi and Andrew Steer.
- A three-part series on Stroke. This series offers general audiences basic information on strokes, their signs, symptoms, complications and risk factors.
- Heart Sounds in Children. This module teaches healthcare professionals how to tell the difference between normal and abnormal heart sounds and murmurs in small children.
The World Health Organization states that cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death globally, taking an estimated 17.9 million lives every year.
In 2015 WiRED developed an animation tracing the progression of strep throat to rheumatic heart disease. In minutes the video describes the disease and explains why it is so serious, why it prevails in underserved communities and why we need to address it. The video is available in English, Spanish and Portuguese.
